Originally Kabbalah is a Hebrew tradition based on an esoteric commentary of the Torah. Etymologically the word Qabalah, simply means "tradition" and its Hebrew root "to receive". The Torah consists of the first five books of the Bible (Old Testament) written in ancient Hebrew. Gradually, other more specific books have been associated with this tradition and constitute its main references: Sefer Yetzirah, Sefer Raziel, Sefer Bahir, and the Zohar.

Qabalistic teachings and practices were restricted to Jewish people until the Renaissance. During the fifteenth-century, only a small number of Christian philosophers learned this aspect of the Western tradition and used it to interpret their own religion: Christianity. Of course, this esoteric manipulation of numbers, letters, and sacred words existed long before the Jews began using these principles in their religion. 

One of the central texts of Qabalah is entitled the Sepher Yetzirah ("The Book of Creation"). This esoteric and religious writing tells the story of the creation of the universe with the use of the twenty-two letters of the Hebrew alphabet. This text is fundamental to understand this tradition. That is why most of the nineteenth- and twentieth-century initiates used these correspondences and the associated Sephirotic system. 

Several initiatory Orders were and still are deeply rooted in this Tradition. Other initiatory Orders such as the Aurum Solis developed their own version of Qabalah by experimenting correspondences and symbols. Combining various aspects of Hermeticism from the Renaissance and modern magic to traditional Qabalah, our Order obtain a very practical and efficient system. 

Denning and Phillips, past Grand Masters of the Aurum Solis published a very complete and powerful presentation of High Magick which was almost essentially focused on the Hebrew approach with few Greek variants. The current Grand Master Jean-Louis de Biasi who is graduated in Hebrew and is also the head of the “Kabbalistic Order of the Rose-Cross,” brought to the Aurum Solis a deep expertise in Christian and Greek Qabalah. Its French and English books should be learnt to go deeper in this direction. 

It is important to read and learn this system, even if this is different than original Theurgy. It is worth to mention that neither Theurgists, Neoplatonists, Fideli d’Amore, nor Marsilio Ficino mentioned or used Qabalah. This is something that must be highlighted if we want to understand the Theurgic and Hermetic Traditions. Qabalah is for that not mandatory. However, this is an essential part of the Western Tradition and has been used several times as such by our Order. 

Still, we must be careful. Learning and practicing Qabalah can lead us to a dogmatic attitude. This is one of its main problem. This is why the Aurum Solis is today very prudent in the way Qabalah is learnt and practiced. Students should keep in mind that Hebrew Qabalah is used as a map and only as a map. The map itself is in no way an absolute Truth. In fact, as you can see in the books of the “Magical Philosophy,” the Hebrew Qabalah is used according to Hermetic principles. It is recommende to the initiates of the Aurum Solis who want to deepen their knowledge and experience to join the “Kabbalistic Order of the Rose-Cross,” and learn the texts offered by ther Aurum Solis.
